Reactive Dog Training & Leash Reactivity Help in Clarksville, Nashville & Online
Helping Reactive Dogs Feel Safer and Calmer with the LEGS Ethological Approach
If your dog barks, lunges, pulls, or explodes on the leash when they see other dogs, people, bikes, or cars — you’re not alone, and your dog is not “bad.”
Reactivity is usually a sign your dog is overwhelmed, anxious, or over-aroused. At Lakota’s Legacy, I don’t just manage the symptoms. I use the LEGS ethological framework to understand why your dog reacts and create real, lasting change. I want the dog to choose their behavior out of willingness and desire; not force or punishment. In order to that, we need to be able to connect to the dog’s understanding (🧠) in a way that makes sense to them, empowers them, and teaches them skills that get real life results that last! These are Life Skills, and this is where Concept Training comes into play!
By looking at both nature (genetics, breed instincts, temperament) and nurture (past experiences, learning history, and environment), we build a personalized Total Welfare plan that helps your dog feel safer, more confident, and less reactive in everyday life.
Common Types of Reactivity We Help With
Leash reactivity toward other dogs or people
Lunging, barking, and growling on walks
Over-arousal and frustration when seeing triggers
Barrier reactivity (fences, windows, car windows)
Fear-based reactivity or aggressive-looking responses
Difficulty recovering after encountering a trigger
Why the LEGS Approach Works So Well for Reactive Dogs
Most traditional reactive dog training focuses only on commands or distractions. A lot of them use force, heavy corrections, prong collars, or shock collars. A lot of trainers put the blame on the dog without consideration of various other important factors. That’s simply not my style and is not what is needed. Learning theory doesn’t only apply to our animals; it applies to us as well. If you have fallen for instahits and quick fixes, finding your dog is getting even worse, or you feel incompetent/confused/failing, then we can change all that.
The LEGS method is different and a huge part of what I consider when working with a dog.
It examines the four key pillars — Learning, Environment, Genetics, and Self — that drive your dog’s behavior
It uncovers the root causes instead of just treating the symptoms
It combines positive reinforcement, counter-conditioning, desensitization, and smart management strategies
It addresses your dog’s emotional needs and stress levels for deeper, longer-lasting results
Completely force-free and humane — no punishment, no flooding, no dominance
This science-based, Total Welfare approach leads to calmer walks, reduced stress for the whole family, and a dog who can actually enjoy life again.
